Saint Peregrine Laziosi: Hope and Prayer for Those Facing Cancer

The remarkable story of a Servite religious whose faith in Christ continues to inspire those facing cancer and serious illness.

A Saint of Hope in Times of Suffering

For families facing a cancer diagnosis, the journey can be filled with uncertainty, fear, and difficult questions. Yet even in life's most painful moments, the Catholic faith reminds us that we are never abandoned by God.

Saint Peregrine Laziosi, a religious of the Order of the Servants of Mary, is widely invoked as a heavenly intercessor for those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses. His life is a testimony to conversion, perseverance, prayer, and trust in Jesus Christ.

From Rebellion to a Life Dedicated to God

Peregrine was born around 1265 in Forlì, Italy, into the Laziosi family. According to traditional accounts, his early years were marked by opposition to the Church. During a period of unrest, he encountered Saint Philip Benizi, the Prior General of the Servites. Accounts of this encounter differ, but Peregrine's life eventually underwent a profound transformation.

Around the age of thirty, he entered the Order of the Servants of Mary. He devoted himself to prayer, penance, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and care for the poor. His conversion reminds us that God's mercy can transform even the most troubled heart.

The Healing Before the Crucifix

Later in life, Peregrine developed a serious wound on his right leg. His condition became so severe that physicians of his time considered amputation necessary.

According to the traditional account preserved by the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Peregrine went before an image of Christ crucified on the night before the planned operation. There, he prayed fervently for healing. As he fell asleep, he experienced a vision in which Jesus descended from the Cross and healed his leg.

The following morning, the physician who came to perform the operation discovered that Peregrine's leg had healed. This account became closely associated with his devotion and inspired generations of believers to seek his intercession during serious illness.

Why Is Saint Peregrine Invoked by Cancer Patients?

Saint Peregrine became especially associated with prayers for those suffering from cancer because of the tradition surrounding his grave illness and healing. His devotion spread throughout Italy and, through the Order of the Servants of Mary, across the world.

He died on May 1, 1345. Pope Paul V authorized his veneration as Blessed in 1609, and Pope Benedict XIII canonized him on December 27, 1726. His liturgical memorial is celebrated on May 1.

Today, many Catholic families turn to his intercession when praying for loved ones receiving cancer treatment, undergoing surgery, or enduring prolonged illness.

Why Do Catholics Ask Saints to Intercede?

Catholics do not worship Saint Peregrine or attribute divine healing power to him. All grace comes from God, and Jesus Christ is our Savior and the one mediator between God and humanity.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 956, explains the intercession of the saints and their continuing communion with the faithful on earth. When Catholics ask Saint Peregrine to pray for someone, they are asking a member of the heavenly Church to join them in prayer before God.

Our hope rests in Christ—not in the saint apart from Christ.

Prayer, Medical Care, and Christian Hope

Praying for healing does not mean rejecting medical treatment. Doctors, nurses, caregivers, and families perform an invaluable service to those experiencing illness. Seeking medical care and praying for God's help are not opposing choices.

The Church also offers the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to strengthen those facing serious illness. Although we may pray for physical healing, no particular prayer guarantees a miraculous cure. Christian hope trusts that God's love remains present even when suffering continues.

Prayer for Cancer Patients Through the Intercession of Saint Peregrine

Lord Jesus Christ, Divine Physician of our souls and bodies,

We come before You with trust, bringing all those who are suffering from cancer and serious illness.

Through the intercession of Saint Peregrine Laziosi, we ask You to strengthen them in their suffering, comfort them in their fears, and surround them with Your loving presence.

Guide the hands and minds of their doctors. Give patience and courage to their families and caregivers.

If it is Your holy will, grant them healing. Above all, sustain them with faith, peace, and the certainty that they are never alone.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick, accompany them with her maternal care.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Peregrine Laziosi, pray for us.

A Christian Invitation to Compassion

Honoring Saint Peregrine also means caring for those who suffer. We can visit the sick, accompany families through difficult treatments, pray with those who seek spiritual support, and offer practical help whenever possible.

Sometimes a simple presence, a compassionate word, or a quiet prayer becomes a powerful expression of Christ's love. May Saint Peregrine's example remind us that suffering should never leave anyone forgotten or alone.
